Grams are in an Ounce?

How Many Grams are in an Ounce?
Ounces and Fluid Ounces Explained!

Are you unfamiliar with ounces. And not sure how many grams are in an ounce.

Want to skip ahead?

You may have noticed people talking about them in terms of how much they weigh (stones and ounces).

Many traditional recipe’s or an American recipe use ounces more often. Americans have stuck with a lot of older measurements that don’t make as much sense too many people as metric measurements (because metric measurements work on whole numbers).

And so you’ll need to know what an ounce is in grams or you’ll be missing out on a whole world of incredible recipes!

How many grams are in an ounce?

There are 28 grams (28g) in an ounce, though technically speaking, there are 28.3 grams in an ounce. Which means that it can get a little inaccurate at larger measurements, so keep that in mind.

If you memorise that one ounce equals 28.3g, you’ll be able to convert measurements easily when working with American or vintage recipes.

Since it’s not the easiest number to work with if you’re not a natural maths wizard, you may need to use a calculator.

Here’s a handy chart you can keep to hand to help you when cooking and baking (we’ve included the accurate measurements so you can see how we’ve rounded up or down, so you can do the same with other measurements):

Ounces in Grams

½ ounce        =          14g (14.15g)

1 ounce          =          28g (28.3g)

2 ounces        =          57g (56.6g)

4 ounces        =          113g (113.3g)

8 ounces        =          227g (226.7g)

16 ounces     =          454g (453.5g)

32 ounces     =          907g (907.1g)

Note that 16 ounces are equal to one pound.

As with all old measurements, ounces are only precise in the context of themselves. They don’t fit in well with teaspoons, tablespoons, or grams, as we saw above.

For example, a ½ ounce measure is just a little too small to be equal to one tablespoon, which is equal to 15g or 15ml.

How do I measure ounces?

If you have a digital scale, you may have a unit button you can press to change the unit of measurement. If you have a scale that can measure in different units, check to see if your scale will measure in ounces.

As it means you won’t have to do any work converting ounces to grams when baking, you can simply hit the button and switch over when it’s time to measure in ounces.

When you don’t have a kitchen scale that can measure ounces, you’ll need to calculate what the measurement you need in ounces is in grams (use our chart above for help!) and measure it that way.

Are ounces the same as fluid ounces?

If you’ve been to America, watched, or listened to an American order a drink or bottle, you’ll likely have heard the term ‘fluid ounces’.

Fluid ounces are not the same as normal ounces, but they are close. To add more confusion, US and UK fluid

ounces are different, though it is a minute difference so you won’t get drastically different results if you work with one instead of the other.

An ounce is 28.3g and a UK fluid ounce is rounded up to 28.4ml. A US fluid ounce is 29.6ml and is usually rounded up to 30ml to make it easier in recipes.

Remember that one gram is the same as one millilitre, so you can use the same conversion as the chart we included above, and simply turn grams to millilitres when measuring liquids.

How many grams in an ounce?
Wet vs Dry Ingredients

As we learned above, there is a small difference between wet and dry ounces, though it’s generally negligible.

For example, if you’re baking with an American recipe and it calls for 2 fluid ounces, you could round up to 60ml if your mixture seems dry.

Or down to 57ml if you’re worried it’s going to be too wet. Again, 2 or 3 ml or grams is a very small measurement, so it won’t make a big difference (if any), even in difficult baking recipes.

Does ‘oz’ mean ounce?

Yes. When written in a recipe, or on packaging, you’ll typically see ounce written as ‘oz’. A fluid ounce is written as ‘fl oz’. A recipe including liquid may not write fl oz instead of oz.

Are American ounces different from British ounces?

Not really – the only time when US and UK ounces significantly differ is when you’re talking about wine or beer. A pint you order at the pub is 20 fl oz, while a US pint is 16 fl oz.

Are grams or ounces more accurate?

That depends on whether you have an ounce measure or not! Ounces are really only accurate relative to themselves, so if you need to measure out an ounce with grams, it’s going to be more difficult to get an accurate measurement.

Because ounces aren’t equal to a whole gram measurement.

The good news is that, unlike cups, an ounce of something is always an ounce. For example, one ounce of carrots will weigh the same as one ounce of flour.

But one cup of diced carrots won’t weigh the same as one cup of flour.
